Pragati Kharya, a PhD student in Earth Sciences from Sanigawan, Kanpur, is said to have killed herself the previous night in her hostel room (D-116) in hall number 4.
A note was found at the scene in which the student had written that she was responsible for her own death and the 28-year-old had completed her BSc from Delhi University’s Hansraj College and her MSc from Bundelkhand University in Jhansi.
Her roommates alerted the administrators of the institute, who then called the police. IIT Kanpur issued an official statement expressing its sympathies for Kharya’s unfortunate and unexpected passing. The announcement said that in December 2021, Kharya had enrolled in the PhD program.
“A police forensic team has visited the campus to investigate the circumstances of the death. The Institute is awaiting the results of the police investigation to determine the cause. The institute extends its deepest condolences and prays for strength and comfort to her family and friends in this time of great loss,” IIT said.
According to a remark from Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur), “Police quickly arrived at the scene and found that Pragati’s room was locked from the inside after receiving information about the suicide.”
The ACP added that she did not place blame for her extreme decision on anyone in a suicide note that was discovered. According to the report, a cell phone was also taken from the dorm room, which might help the authorities solve the suicide’s riddle. The ACP went on to say that preliminary inquiries and other formalities must be fulfilled before any potential reasons for the suicide can be determined.
