Prafulla Dhariwal is a research scientist at OpenAI who is originally from Pune, but currently resides in San Francisco, California. He is a very dynamic individual with a background in mathematics, software engineering, and quantitative analysis. Due to his diverse background and skillset, he can make significant contributions across various domains.
In high school, he scored 295 out of 300 in the physics-chemistry-mathematics (PCM) group in his Class XII exams and achieved a score of 190 in the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MT-CET) and he also scored 330 out of 360 in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE-Mains).
He is a former student of the Dr. Kalmadi Shyamrao High School and built his first site at the age of 11.
Education
28 year old Prafulla Dhariwal obtained his early education from India and notably won the National Talent Search Scholarship from the Government of India in 2009. That same year, Prafulla secured a gold medal at the International Astronomy Olympiad, held in China. Prafulla excelled in academics as a young child and won consecutive gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the International Physics Olympiad in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
He won the prestigious annual Abasaheb Naravane Memorial Prize in 2013 for his outstanding achievements. He later obtained his bachelors in Computer Science, Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2013 – 2017. Prafulla Dhariwal graduated with an impressive GPA of 5.0/5.0 During his time in college, he also took active participation in Machine Learning Reading Group and Theory CS Reading Group Prafulla also contributed as an undergraduate researcher at MIT.
Career and profession
Right after his graduation, Prafulla Dhariwal worked as a quantitative analyst intern at The D. E. Shaw Group, where he developed a model for predicting cancellation activity on US stock exchanges. Using this model, Prafulla devised a trading strategy that directly correlates cancellation activity with market profit and loss.
He later worked as an Undergraduate Researcher at MIT before taking up the role of a research intern at OpenAI. After working on the role for four months, he took up his new role as a Research Scientist at OpenAI, where he has since worked for 7 years and 4 months. At his current job, Prafulla Dhariwal deals with creating generative models and unsupervised learning. Over the years, he has also released various publications across different fields of study.
