Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo a Muslim by religion is a veteran Indonesian politician who was born on October 17, 1951, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Besides his career as a politician, he also works as a businessman and was a former army lieutenant general. He currently serves as the Minister of Defense. While official results are not out yet, Prabowo is currently on the brink of becoming the next president of Indonesia. According to four pollsters, Prabowo had about 58% of the votes based on ballots from a sample count of voting stations across the nation. Notably, these numbers have been accurate in past elections. Prabowo has the implicit backing of the current president, Joko Widodo, after he vowed to continue Widodo’s trademark policies.
Interestingly, Prabowo is not using his military credentials in this election, and has instead chosen to project a softer and more grandfatherly image this time around. This has worked out well, as Indonesia has a large youth population, with over half of Indonesian voters under 40. As such, many of his voters have limited knowledge of his darker military past under Suharto’s autocratic rule. Prabowo recently posted a viral video of him dancing at campaign events, which prompted debate over the whitewashing of his brutal past. As the video goes viral across sites like TikTok, it has helped him tap a key demographic of voters.
Prabowo Subianto military and political career
Prabowo comes from a very wealthy political family and spent the first half of his career in the military. He briefly trained at a US Army post then called Fort Benning, and was a special forces commander. Under Suharto’s regime, the 72-year-old served as a military general. Interestingly, he is famous for having ordered the kidnapping of democracy activists and directed the massacre of independence fighters in East Timor.
Following these accusations, Prabowo was dishonourably discharged from the military in 1998 but never faced criminal prosecution. As a result, he went into self-imposed exile in Jordan a few years later, in the 2000s. After spending some years there, he returned to Indonesia, where he started building up his wealth in various businesses. Prabowo Subianto finally made the jump to politics and has previously run for president two times. Interestingly, he lost both times to Widodo through the nationalist Gerindra Party.
