Prabhtej Singh will replace Ashish Shelar, who is the new Information and Technology minister in Maharashtra government.

Alongside Bhatia, advocate and a former wicketkeeper batsman Saikia also got appointed as the new secretary of the BCCI.

Prabhtej Bhatia bio

Born in 1991, Prabhtej Bhatia is the newly appointed BCCI treasurer and the son of former CSCS president Baldev Singh Bhatia. He played an important role in the state getting full-member status in 2016, and he has served as an Apex Council member in BCCI’s 2019-2022 tenure. He is currently 33 years old and was notably among the three-member committee that oversaw the allegations of Wriddhiman Saha receiving threats from a journalist.

His family has been in the liquor distribution industry for several decades, after his grandfather opened a liquor shop in Rajnandgaon, where he settled after partition, in 1948.

Born in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, Bhatia grew up in Rajnandgaon, a small town about 70km from the state capital and while frequents Delhi for work, he still considers Raipur home. The Simba brewery is also mid-way between Raipur and Rajnandgaon, in Durg’s industrial area and his father and grandfather have grown up in Rajnandgaon.

Bhatia’s grandfather, Surjit Singh Bhatia came to India during Partition, leaving behind well-settled businesses in the Mandi Bahauddin and zila Gujrat areas of Pakistan.

The early 1950s saw the Bhilai steel plant being set up in collaboration with the erstwhile Soviet Union and his family did a good deal of business, selling alcohol to the Russians working at the plant.

After finishing his schooling from The International School, Bengaluru, Bishop Cotton, Shimla, and the G D Goenka World School in Gurugram, Bhatia moved to the UK in 2009 to study for an undergraduate degree in economics and finance.

He married his wife Harleen in 2017.

Education

Prabhtej Bhatia completed his undergraduate degree in Economics and Finance at the Exeter University. It was during this time that the he developed the idea of starting a craft beer firm in India.

Profession and career

Prabhtej Bhatia is the newly appointed treasurer of BCCI. Following his graduation, he has been managing a beer firm, and was notably one of the firsts to tap into the business. Prabhtej established the firm (Simba Beer) back in 2014. He is the co-founder and CEO of the company. Despite his father’s suggestion to open a distillery or a winery. During the last financial year, the firm generated an annual revenue worth 30.6 million dollars.

Simba beer which is now found on shelves at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Goa, Kolkata and the states of Chattisgarh and Assam, actually started off in Durg, Chattisgarh after Prabhtej Singh Bhatia decided to build a brewery in the state where he grew up in.

The company officially launched its first beer Simba Strong in market in 2016, and followed it up with Lager, Wit and Stout and while Singh’s net worth isn’t known, Simba reported revenue of ₹76 crore in 2017-18 and ₹125 crore in 2018-19 and the capacity of his Durg brewery was 86.4 million bottles a year at the time.

Interestingly, his favourite brew is ironically Silver Moon, a renowned premier green tea brand. He will now take up his new role as the treasurer of BCCI. Prabhtej will take official charge of his new office during its special general body meeting in Mumbai. According to reports, he will assume office for the next 10 months.
