Poonam Jha Azad, Kirti’s wife, was reportedly ill for a long time. Deeply saddened by the unfortunate event, Kirti used his X account to inform every one of the news. “Poonam, my wife, has passed away. Left at 12:40 PM to go to her heavenly aboard. I appreciate all of your good wishes,” the post said.

Mamta Banerjee posted condolences message on her X handle. She wrote, “Saddened to know that Poonam Jha Azad, wife of our MP & World Cup-winning cricketer Kirti Azad, has breathed her last.”
Poonam Jha Azad was born in 1968 and attended Patna Women’s College in Bihar. Before she passed away on September 2, 2024, she suffered from a severe illness for a number of years. During her last days, her spouse Kirti Azad and other family members were by her side.

Poonam Jha Azad began her career as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson, a role she held for 25 years. She ran for the Gole Market Assembly seat in 2003 and defeated Sheila Dikshit, the chief minister of Delhi at the time.
Citing the BJP’s negligence, she moved to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in November 2016. Her tenure with the AAP was brief, though, since in 2017 she became a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). Her political trajectory is a reflection of her flexibility and dedication to her principles.
Her spouse Kirti joined the INC two years later after meeting TMC Chief Banerjee in Delhi. She was well-known for her commitment to social causes and her engaged political participation.
Azad, her spouse, is a TMC MP from Durgapur who is a Bardhaman. He is also the son of Bhagwat Jha Azad, the former Bihar chief minister. The cricket player participated in India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup winning squad.
Kirti abandoned the Congress Party to join the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after meeting Mamata Banerjee, the party’s leader.
