The video ignited all sorts of conversations around first responder conduct and how children in crisis should be treated.
The girl’s grandmother, who wasn’t home at the time, said she was devastated by the video saying, “Maybe it was a blessing I wasn’t there.”
On August 5, the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company announced Alt’s suspension in a Facebook post, stating an investigation is underway.
“The Fire Company is presently reviewing all of its training, policies and procedures and will determine if further training with respect to responding to emergency calls is required. The Fire Company does not condone this behavior and deems it unacceptable,” the agency said.

A now-viral video showing Long Island Fire Chief Peter Alt cursing at a 10-year-old has been spreading across social media. The scene was recorded during an emergency response in West Babylon, New York, after the family of a 10-year-old girl called for help during a mental health episode. As responders came on the scene and loaded the girl into an ambulance, North Babylon Fire Chief Peter Alt, who was clearly frustrated, yelled at the kid:

The child then screams back:

To which Alt replies:

He then mumbles something as the ambulance doors closed. A TikTok user, @chanzillaaa originally posted the video with a caption condemning the behavior, following which the clip has been viewed millions of times.
Following the incident, the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company relieved Alt of duty and issued an internal review. The department released a statement saying:
The fire company does not condone this behavior and deems it unacceptable.”

Peter Alt biography and age
Peter Alt is a longtime member of the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company who has over two decades of service. Although his exact age hasn’t been confirmed, he is likely in his mid-to-late 40s or early 50s. He has held several senior roles within the department for years and he was serving as chief during the time of the incident.
Peter Alt also works as a conductor for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR).
However, following the viral video, the company decided to remove him from duty and announced a review of its training, policies, and emergency response procedures. The Town of Babylon officials also condemned his behavior, calling it “appalling” and:
at odds with the standards of dignity, respect, and professionalism our residents deserve.”
