His refusal to remove the VK profiles of Ukrainian protesters and Alexei Navalny at the behest of Russian security services led to his formal dismissal on April 21, 2014.
He later claimed that VK had been taken over by allies of Vladimir Putin and subsequently left Russia.
After fleeing Russia, Durov obtained citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis and deposited $300 million in Swiss banks. His main focus became Telegram, which was initially headquartered in Berlin before relocating to Dubai.
