Paulo Bento Professional Career And Stats

Paulo Bento had a 4 year abroad spell with Real Oviedo, helping out the Spanish club always retain its La Liga status before shifting to Sporting CP where Paulo completed his career as a player. Later on, Paulo was part of the star-studded team that achieved a double in 2002 under the direction of Laszlo Boloni.

He played in 31 games and one goal in the Primeira Liga and played alongside Mario Jardel and Joao Vieira Pinto among others. Bento has earned a total of 35 caps for the Portugal national team, his first game coming on the 15th of January in 1992 in a 0–0 draw with Spain and his last being the 0–1 loss to South Korea on the 14th of June in 2002 in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Bento also played in the UEFA Euro 2000 along with teammates Abel Xavier who played with him at Oviedo for two seasons. His mate Nuno Gomes was suspended due to his bad behavior during the match of the semi-final defeat against team France.

After an emotional retirement at the age of 35 in 2004, Bento got the job of Sporting’s youth team coach. He won the junior championship in 2005 and he has developed a big fan base to the future. After the sacking of Jose Peseiro midway through 2005 and 2006 seasons, Bento was promoted to first-team duties being relatively inexperienced. Later on, ento signed a new two-year contract in June 2007.

On 1st of February 2022 with a 2–0 away win over Syria, Bento-led Taegeuk Warriors qualified for this year’s World Cup, the nation’s 10th consecutive edition. On 23rd of November in the finals in Qatar, he was booked in the group-stage fixture against Uruguay for dissent near the end of the 0–0 draw.

He is paid $1.35 million per year as coach of Korea and has been devoted to the 4-3-3 formation for several years now and used it throughout the qualifying campaign.
