She won the gold in the women’s 200-meter T12 event on the final day of competition, smashing her own personal record.
The athlete finished in 24.95 seconds. With her incredible performance, she surpassed her previous personal best of 25.16 seconds and won the gold medal.
Who is Simran Sharma?
25 year old Simran Sharma is a visually impaired para athlete from India who was born in 1999 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. She was born as a premature baby after a six-and-a-half month term, a report in The Indian Express stated.
She completed her graduation from the Rukmani Modi Mahila Inter College at Modinagar.
A look at Simran Sharma’s career so far
Simran Sharma was the member of the Indian team that will compete in the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China in 2022. The 26-year-old won two silver medals in the 100- and 200-meter T12 events at the Continental Games.
She participated in both the China Grand Prix and the World Para Grand Prix in Dubai in 2021. Her qualification for the 2021 Paris Olympics made her the first paraathlete from India. Nevertheless, she received no medal.
At the 2023 Asian Games, she broke the record in both the 100-meter and 200-meter events, finishing in 12.68 and 26.12 seconds, respectively.
She just won the title of world champion in the women’s 200-meter T12 final at the World Para Athletics Championship in Kobe, Japan, setting a personal best time of 24.95 seconds.
By winning a gold medal, the Indian paraathlete also fulfilled her Paris Paralympic quota.

Simran Sharma mentioned how worried her parents, father named Manoj Kumar and mother named Savita Sharma were when she was born premature.
While speaking with The Indian Express, the athlete told her parents had sleepless nights following the condition doubting if she would even survive.
“It was a miracle that I survived but it would also mean that when I grew up, I had poor vision and would struggle to see things even six feet away,” she told the afformentioned source.
She would get teased by the neighbours for her vision however, her parents stayed with her and impired her for the motivation and here she is.
Simran Sharma is married to Gajendra Singh. She met him in 2015, the time he was an athlete as well. The two got married in 2017.
