At the Paralympics 2024, Indian archer Harvinder Singh bagged the gold medal in the men’s recurve individual by winning 6-0 against Polish archer L Ciszek. Earlier, Singh won 7-3 against Reza Arab Ameri to qualify for the final. On Thursday, Singh will represent India in the mixed team recurve last 16, where they will face-off against Australia.

Harvinder Singh, born on February 25, 1991, in Haryana, etched his name in history as the first Indian to win a Paralympic medal in archery, earning a bronze in the men’s singles recurve event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. His journey of excellence continues as he has once again qualified to represent India at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, marking his second appearance on this prestigious stage.

Harvinder Singh belongs to humble family as his Paramjeet Singh, his father, is a farmer and his mother died before the Asian Para Games. He is a resident of Kaithal village in Haryana. Singh has done his PhD in Economics from the Punjab University, Patiala.

Singh’s illustrious career in para-athletics is highlighted by a gold medal in an individual event at the 2018 Asian Para Games. He further bolstered India’s success at the 2022 Asian Para Games, held in 2023, by contributing to the team’s bronze medal victory.

In June 2024, Singh secured a bronze medal at the Para Archery World Ranking event in the Czech Republic in June 2024. Earlier in April 2024, he added another bronze to his collection at the World Archery Oceania 2024 Para Grand Prix in Australia.

At just a year and a half old, Harvinder contracted dengue, and a subsequent adverse reaction to an injection left his legs impaired. His father, Paramjeet Singh, works as a farmer. The loss of his mother, just before the 2018 Asian Para Games, deeply affected him. He went on to dedicate his gold medal victory at the event to her memory, a tribute to the profound influence she had on his life.

The 33 year old has a world ranking of 12 in the men’s recurve ranking.
