English Football League (EFL) Championship side Oxford United FC have officially signed Indonesian wonderkid Marselino Ferdinan from Belgian club Deinze, find out more about him and the move below.

Oxford narrowly lost to Coventry on Friday and will next face Blackburn on Saturday at Ewood Park where they could present Ferdinan with his debut.

Marselino Ferdinan signs for Oxford United

Oxford United have signed Indonesian wonderkid Marselino Ferdinan on a two-year free transfer deal. The 19-year-old joins from Belgian side Deinze, and he could possibly make his debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. If he does make his debut this weekend, he will become the first-ever Indonesian-born player to feature in the second division of English football.

While speaking about his move, Ferdinan stated:

“I’m thrilled and still can’t believe I’m here. Being the first Indonesian-born player to play in the Championship if selected fills me with immense pride. I won’t take this opportunity for granted, and I’ll give 100 per cent to make the most of it.”

Marselino is just one of three Indonesian players who are currently in England’s top four leagues. The other two players include Wolves defender Justin Hubner, and Blackpool’s Elkan Baggott in League One.

Marselino Ferdinan bio

Marselino Ferdinan Philipus is an Indonesian professional footballer who was born on September 9, 2004, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He currently plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Oxford United in the EFL Championship, as well as for the Indonesia national team.  Marselino belongs to the Ngada ethnic group and his traditional name based on their customs is Marselino Ferdinan Dhewa Kedhi.

His mother comes from Surabaya, while his father belongs to Ngada, East Nusa Tenggara. Marselino spent his early his school years in Surabaya and he is the youngest child of four siblings. He has an older brother named Oktafianus Fernando, who played for Persebaya Surabaya during the 2021-22 Liga 1 season. He then joined PSIS Semarang in the following season.

Marselino is currently 19 years old and stands at a height of 1.78 m (5’10”). He roughly weighs around 67 kg.

Career

Marselino Ferdinan started out his senior professional football career with Persebaya Surabaya in 2021, after emerging through their youth system. He made his senior team debut during the 2021/22 Liga 1 season on September 12, 2021 in a match against Persikabo 1973. The match ended with a 3–1 victory in favour for Persebaya.

After spending two seasons with the club, He eventually joined Belgian First Division B club Deinze, on February 1, 2023. Ferdinan joined the side on a one-and-a-half-year contract and made his debut against Jong Genk. He then scored his first and only league goal for Deinze against Virton during a 3-1 win on April 22, 2023. He has now officially joined EFL Championship club Oxford United as of August 19, 2024. On the international stage, Marselino has 23 international caps with three gaols for Indonesia.
