For the unaware, social media platforms, especially X/Twitter, and Reddit are currently flooded with racist abuse comments towards a Somalian-American State Senator. The 35-year-old politician is currently running for the position of Minneapolis.

The online trollers have been mocking not only his heritage, but also questioning his citizenship. There are several who seemed to be telling him to “go back to Mogadishu.” Despite receiving the online trolling and hate, the politician has been pushing forward a bold campaign that promises to raise the minimum wage to $20 by 2028, freeze rents, and end police cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Who is Omar Fateh?

Omar Fateh, whose full name is Omar Mahmood Fateh, is an American politician. He was born in Washington D.C. on April 19, 1990, to Muslim Somalian immigrant parents and currently lives in Minneapolis’ Phillips neighborhood.

His father arrived in America in 1963 to study civil engineering on a full scholarship to Montana State University and his mother immigrated later and received her masters degree.

While completing his Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Fateh spent his early career working youth deemed at-risk, especially students of color, to find opportunities in education. Next, Fateh worked for the City of Minneapolis as a Community Specialist, where he worked to improve the City’s outreach to East African communities. Next, he worked for the MN Department of Transportation as a project coordinator, functioning as a liaison between the state and outside researchers who studied the impact of MNDOT projects on the environment, communities, etc. Before his first run for the legislature in 2018, Fateh worked for the MN Department of Revenue in the property tax division. Since his 2018 run, Fateh has worked for the University of Minnesota as a business analyst. This continues to be his full-time day job outside of the legislative session.

As per reports, the politician graduated from Falls Church High School and later went to George Mason University and earned an undergraduate degree.

In 2020, Fateh ran and won a successful primary campaign for MN Senate representing District 62, where he currently resides as the incumbent Senator and in the senate, Fateh sits on the Human Serivices Reform, Human Services Licensing, State Government & Elections, and Technology & Reform Committees. He is a member of the Council of Minnesotans of African Heritage (CMAH) as well as the sitting DFL Senator on the Legislative Commission on Cybersecurity.

He is a member of Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Party, aka DFL, and represents district 62, which reportedly includes parts of South Minneapolis in Hennepin County. He is reported to be the first Somali American and Muslim to serve in the Minnesota Senate.

Earlier, in November, 2024, Fateh declared his candidacy for the post of Mayor of Minneapolis in the 2025 elections.

Marital Status

As per his Instagram profile, which goes by the name @Omarfatehmn, where he has approximately 4,664 followers, Omar Fateh is married.

Omar Fateh and his wife Kaltum rent an apartment in the Ventura Village neighborhood.

Though, as per reports, Fateh’s sister-in-law, Zaynab Mohamed, is also a Senator of Minnesota. She is also a member of DFL. She represents district 63, which reportedly includes southeast Minneapolis and parts of Richfield.
