Since 2024, Omar Abdullah has been the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, a union territory. He has been the vice president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference since 2009 and was the chief minister from 2009 to 2014. Abdullah served as a member of the Lok Sabha for Srinagar from 1998 to 2009.

After forming a government in alliance with the Congress party on January 5, 2009, he served as the state’s eleventh and youngest chief minister as well as the youngest member of the Lok Sabha.
He served as a representative for Jammu and Kashmir, India’s Srinagar seat, in the 14th Lok Sabha. From July 23, 2001, until December 23, 2002, he served as the federal minister of state for external affairs in the NDA administration of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In October 2002, he left the NDA government to focus on his work with the party.
