Who is Joe Cox?
Kelly described Joe Cox as a “bad boy” during the podcast. Cox, who lived in the same dorm as Matthew, is now an American football coach.
Cox helped propel a Rams’ offense that turned in some of the most productive seasons in school history and in 2019, the Rams ranked 14th in the nation in passing offense, averaging 305.3 yards per game through the air.
Cox was part of the coaching staff at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C., from 2013-14, helping the school win back-to-back state championships and joined the Mallard Creek staff in 2013 as quarterbacks coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2014.
Cox and his wife, Erica, were married in March 2016 and have one daughter, Avery, and twin boys named Jace and Tate.
Born on November 27, 1986, in Charlotte, North Carolina, the 37-year-old former quarterback played for the University of Georgia for four seasons and was the starting quarterback in the 2009 season.
His coaching career began in 2013 at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, as a quarterbacks coach, where he later became the offensive coordinator, leading the team to a state title.
Joe Cox’s coaching journey continued with roles at Colorado State Rams, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Charlotte 49ers, before joining the University of Alabama for a season.
Where is Cox Now?
Joe Cox was hired by Alabama head coach Nick Saban in February 2022 to coach the Crimson Tide’s tight ends.
Before joining Alabama, Cox spent one season coaching tight ends for his hometown team, the Charlotte 49ers. As per reports, currently, he is the tight ends coach at Ole Miss.
Cox will earn $325,000 in 2024 and $500,000 in 2025 and he replaced John David Baker, who left to become the offensive coordinator at East Carolina.
Logan Gray is the unnamed backup qb that Kelly Stafford is referencing having dated at UGA to make Matthew jealous, not Joe Cox
I don’t personally care, but I knew Joe’s wife in college and she’s a great lady. I’ve already seen a few off color tweets about it, so share this info pic.twitter.com/RuiGewPzKj

What Did Kelly Say?
Kelly Stafford recounted on the podcast how dating Matthew’s backup made him jealous, describing Matthew as “sweet and a Southern gentleman,” in contrast to his backup, who was the “complete opposite.”
Despite the uncertainty of their future back then, Kelly and Matthew Stafford have been married since 2015 and have four daughters: twins Chandler and Sawyer, Hunter, and Tyler.
Reflecting on their journey, Kelly mentioned that she would have laughed at the idea of them ending up together with children back in their college days.
