After being transported by air to Royal Adelaide Hospital, she was put into an induced coma. About 1.40 pm, the event occurred at the Strathalbyn Racecourse in the southeast of Adelaide. The young jockey lost consciousness but retained the ability to move her hands and legs.

It appeared that the mare, Iva Dream, had clipped the heels of another horse, hurling the jockey over the animal’s head and approximately 50 metres over the finish line, as Hannan was finishing her race on that horse. According to a representative for the South African Ambulance Service, Hannan had spinal injuries and wasn’t aware when paramedics got there.

Following votes by Hannan’s fellow riders to abandon the programme, Racing South Australia postponed all of the meet’s remaining races, including the Strathalbyn Cup. Racing SA issued a statement announcing the postponement of the Strathalbyn meeting till a later date. They stated:

We would like to thank the on track medical teams at Strathalbyn who ensured Kelsey received immediate care as well as the State Rescue Helicopter Service for their swift response.
