For the preceding three months, Calamia had been anxiously awaiting confirmation regarding his ability to compete. In July, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency notified Calamia via email that he might be punished for using testosterone, a medication that is prohibited yet has the potential to improve performance for athletes competing in events sanctioned by USA Track & Field, as per a report by Washington Post.

Cal Calamia, a cross-country coach and runner from San Francisco who is 27 years old, is one of the founding members of the nonbinary running movement.

He fought for the nonbinary division at the San Francisco Marathon last year and ultimately won it. The promoters of the Boston Marathon hired nonbinary transmasculine athlete Calamia as an unpaid consultant in April.

Meanwhile, the nonbinary runner is now permitted by USADA to use testosterone while competing in USA Track and Field competitions. The Washington Post reported that last week he obtained confirmation from the United States Anti-Doping Agency that he had been given the go-ahead to compete at USATF events despite taking testosterone, a chemical that USADA typically forbids due to its potential for performance enhancement.

Who is Cal Calamia

Cal Calamia is a non-binary transmasculine athlete born in 1996. Alongside running, he is also an activist and poet. In December 2022, Calamia founded the first non-binary running group, dubbed nbrc. The group meets frequently for runs in the Bay Area.

Last month, despite USADA’s admonishments to stop competing while the TUE was pending, Calamia ran in the nonbinary division of the Philadelphia Distance Run, a half marathon that he completed in a personal best time of 1 hour and 20 minutes, placing him fourth.

Since taking testosterone as part of his gender transition in 2019, Calamia uses both the and they pronouns and has been open about it on social media. Calamia’s gender was determined at birth as female. Since 2022, he has been an advocate for non-binary and transgender runners after being the first non-binary winner of the San Francisco marathon. In the non-binary category at the Chicago Marathon in October 2022, he came in second.
