The decision was made following an FFF emergency meeting in Paris. The federation said:

Noel Le Graet, in agreement with the FFF executive committee gathered today in Paris, has chosen to step down from his role as president until the completion of the audit performed by the sports ministry.”

After making what he later confessed were “clumsy remarks” concerning Zinedine Zidane’s prospective interest in leading the French national team, Le Graet, whose term was set to end in 2024, had come under fire.

What happened? The controversies surrounding La Graet:

In response to a question on whether France legend and World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane had called him to express interest in succeeding Didier Deschamps as a coach, the 81-year-old, who has served as the FFF’s president since 2011, said he “wouldn’t even have taken his call” on Sunday.

The controversy surrounding Zidane began as a result of numerous allegations of staff mistreatment at the FFF, which prompted the French government to audit the federation and Le Graet to be called in for a meeting.

Le Graet denied previous claims, but on Tuesday a female football agent brought up new allegations against the veteran administrator of unwanted sexual attempts in a conversation with the sports publication L’Equipe.

Who is La Graet?

The former socialist mayor of the small Brittany town of Guingamp, Le Graet later managed the development of the neighbourhood football team, which rose to prominence during his tenure as club president. He is the second prominent French sporting official who has been compelled to resign in recent weeks.

Born on 25 December 1941, La Graet is currently 81 years old. Ahead of becoming president, he was the vice president of FFF from 2005 to 2011.

Aged 81, the former president of En Avant Guingamp, in office since 2011 at the head of the French Football Federation, exercises this presidency on a voluntary basis and receives no salary. His net worth stands at $10 million.

All his costs related to travel, catering and other expenses are paid directly by the federation. His attributions also allow him to sit on the FIFA Council: an annual salary of 250,000 euros net per year is granted to him for this function.
