Nithyananda’s family, career and education

Nithyananda was born as Arunachalam Rajasekaran and hails from Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. He was born to his father Arunachalam and his mother Lokanayaki. He was born and raised in the Saiva Vellala community.

He was first noticed at the age of three by Yogiraj Yogananda Puri and claims to have experienced powerful spiritual experiences from the early age of 12 years and to have experienced full enlightenment at 22 years of age. He attended Rajagopal Polytechnic College and holds Indian nationality.

In early 2002 when he was 24 years old, he started his public life under the name Nithyananda. He further says that this name was given by Mahavatar Babaji in a mystical experience during monastic wandering days in the region of the Himalayas. In 2003, he began his ashram Dhyanapeetam in Bidadi near the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Nithyananda was given discourses on the different various scriptures such as Brahma Sutras, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Shiva Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita.

Nithyananda’s student Vijayapriya was recently seen giving a speech at the United Nations Geneva office. She was wearing saffron clothes while delivering the speech. Nithyananda, who is accused of rape as well as kidnapping, shared a picture of Vijayapriya on Twitter.

Nithyananda’s recognition

Nithyananda was chairman of the Florida-based Hindu University of America. In 2012, Nithyananda was recognized among the “100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People” by Watkins’ Mind Body Spirit magazine.

Also in 2012, Nithyananda was appointed the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Adheenam.  In February 2013, the title of Mahamandaleshwar was conferred on Nithyananda in a closed ceremony by Panchayati Mahanirvani Akhara.

Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam,  is a religious organization which has been founded by Nithyananda and it hosts cultural events in the United States as well as India. They hold two Guinness World Records, one for the largest rope yoga class, and one for the largest pole yoga class.

He is said to have a net worth of Rs.10,000 crore or $1.5 billion.
