Born in Hyderabad into a Konkani-speaking family, age 90 Benegal’s journey began with a deep-rooted passion for storytelling. At age 12, inspired by his photographer father, he created his first short film. After completing his M.A. in Economics at Osmania University, he established the Hyderabad Film Society, laying the foundation for his cinematic pursuits.
His wife, age 85 Nira Mukerji Benegal contributes to and supports a diverse range of artistic disciplines including film, literature, music, architecture and design. Born in Lahore in 1939, Benegal attended the American boarding school Woodstock in the Himalayas, and later completed her BA Honours in History at the University of Delhi and had a long and successful career as an editor for the leading publisher of children’s books, India Book House.
She later joined Inside Outside, India’s first and foremost design magazine, as Assistant Editor where she remained for the first three years of its publication and currently she is a member of the Film Selection Committee for the Mumbai Film Festival. She is also a member of the Managing Committee of the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation that promotes western classical music through the presentation of high-quality concerts and music education for children.
Nira and Shyam have a daughter Pia Benegal who is a costume designer. She has been working as a costume designer for over three decades. Nira’s net worth isn’t known though.
Shyam’s father, Sridhar B. Benegal was a photographer. Benegal graduated from Osmania University in Hyderabad.
Film Director Guru Dutt and filmmaker Shyam Benegal were cousins, as Guru Dutt’s maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother of Shyam Benegal were sisters and this relation made both Dutt and Benegal cousins.
Benegal’s filmmaking journey took off with Ankur (1973), a groundbreaking film that unveiled the socio-economic struggles of rural India. This was followed by Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), and Bhumika (1977), a quartet that became cornerstones of the New Indian Cinema movement. His ability to spotlight marginalized voices, coupled with stellar performances by talents like Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah, solidified his reputation.
Throughout his career, Benegal explored diverse themes. His Muslim Women Trilogy (Mammo, Sardari Begum, Zubeidaa) delved into complex female identities, while Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), a monumental TV series, narrated India’s rich history. His biographical films, such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2005), showcased his penchant for storytelling rooted in historical and cultural contexts.
