Shalini Unnikrishnan’s character, portrayed by Adah Sharma, is loosely based on Nimisha Fathima, alias Fathima Isa, one of four women from Kerala who joined the terrorist group ISIS between 2016 and 2018 to fight against US forces in the ISIS-controlled Khorasan Province.

According to reports, Nimisha Fathima and her daughter were among numerous prisoners freed by the Taliban after the Indian authorities declined the Taliban’s offer to transfer them to India along with other Indians.

Who is Nimisha Fathima?

Nimisha Fathima is an Indian national who became notorious after fleeing to Afghanistan to join ISIS. She has been in the news because the recently released The Kerala Story is loosely based on her story and ordeals.

She was born Nimisha Sambat and was a native of Attingal, near the capital city of Kerala. However, she is currently residing in Afghanistan. Her mother’s name is Bindu Sambat, while her father’s name is not known. She also has one brother, an NSG commando holding captain’s rank in the Indian Army.

Nimisha Fathima was born a Hindu but later embraced Islam. She did her schooling at a prestigious school that is renowned for fusing contemporary knowledge with Hindu spiritual teachings. Before fleeing, she was doing her BDS at the Century Dental College, Kasaragod. She was a stage performer, a Bhagavad Gita chanting champion at the state level, and a Bharatanatyam dancer.

She was married, and her husband’s name was Isa, also known as Bekson, who was a born Christian but later converted to Islam. She is also the mother of one daughter. Her husband was killed in Afghanistan while fighting for ISIS against US forces. She is currently in Afghanistan.
