Based out of New York City and Seoul, Korea, Lee works in the field of photography and films. In 2007, Lee got married to actor Teo Yoo. During her childhood, she was exposed to a variety of foreign cultures and Nikki S Lee developed an interest in learning about different cultures. Lee was hesitant to chase her career in art. She further pursued a career in acting but left due to some insecurity about her physical appearance.

Nikki Seung-hee Lee holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in the subject of photography from the University of Chung-Ang based in South Korea. After a year, she shifted to New York City for attending the Fashion Institute of Technology to study commercial photography. Moreover, Lee subsequently earned a degree in Master of Arts in photography from the University of New York University in 1998.

At NYU, Nikki became interested in the conceptual aspect of photography. Prior to her studies there, she basically worked on documentary projects, which required her to go out in the streets and take photographs but she disliked this aspect of the documentary.”

In Nikki S Lee’s career initially began as a photo assistant for LaChapelle Studio. Lee enjoyed working in commercial photography and she also wanted to “make something of her own,” which has propelled her to enter a new career as a photographer.

Since the 1990s, Nikki has spoken about the motivation behind her work. Lee has emphasized the significance of group identity and social performance in the region of Asia, as opposed to a more personal sense of identity in the US. In an interview with the curator RoseLee Goldberg published in 2006, Nikki S Lee stated, “Western culture is much about individuals, while the Eastern culture is more about identity in the context of society. You simply cannot think of yourself out of the context.”
