Who is Jose Peseiro?
Josรฉ Vรญtor dos Santos Peseiro is a Portuguese football manager and a former striker who was born on April 4, 1960, in Coruche, Portugal. The 63-year-old currently manages the Nigerian football national team.
A look at Jose Peseiro’s career
Jose had a modest playing career before taking on coaching roles with a number of clubs in his native country, notably Sporting CP (where he led them to the 2005 UEFA Cup final) and Porto. He also spent a lot of time working in Arab countries, where he managed the Saudi national squad.
Initially serving as a player-coach for his previous squad, Peseiro began his managerial career in the third and fourth divisions of Portuguese football. He joined C.D. Nacional in the summer of 1999, and in just three seasons, he helped the team advance to the Primeira Liga. He guided the squad to a final 11th place in 2002โ03.
Peseiro helped Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid in 2003โ04. Upon the team’s loss of a significant lead at the end of the season to Valencia CF, FC Barcelona, and Deportivo de La Coruรฑa, they were fired, with the latter going back to his assistant role at Manchester United.
He has managed clubs like Sporting CP, Eastern Europe, Saudi Arabia, Braga, Al-Wahda and Al-Ahly before returning to Portugal. He then went to Venezuela and now is in Nigeria on 15 May 2022.
The Portuguese tactician’s match records since he was appointed as the team’s head coach have seen the Super Eagles win three and lose six of their nine matches. Among the six lost, five matches were friendlies.
Peseiro switched to a 3-4-3 formation following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their opening fixture at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the West Africans have since recorded three wins on the bounce against hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Cameroon.
Peseiro, known for his adaptability, utilized a blend of formations – primarily a 3-4-3 and at times a 5-4-1 and this hybrid approach has been crucial in both the offensive and defensive phases of the game. Peseiro’s strategy hinges on a balance between a solid defensive setup and a dynamic attack.

A report in the ICIR outlet suggests that the head coach’s wage reduction fell to 29%, according to the ICIR calculations.
