Ben Sawyer career
Ben Sawyer had led the Sydney Sixers of the Women’s Big Bash League as their head coach. The Sixers were losing finalists in the WBBL seasons of 2015–16 and 2018–19 and won two WBBL competitions in 2016–17 and 2017–18 under his direction.
Sawyer has also coached fast bowling for the New South Wales Breakers and served as an assistant coach for the Australia women’s under-19 team. Sawyer was named head coach of Birmingham Phoenix, a women’s team in The Hundred, in 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of The Hundred in 2020; Sawyer assumed the position in 2021. Sawyer started working as a full-time coach for the New South Wales Breakers in 2020.
Sawyer was named Australia’s first full-time fast bowling coach in July 2021. He therefore resigned from his position at NSW Breakers. Sawyer first announced his retirement from the Sydney Sixers as well, but he ultimately consented to take over as their coach for the 2021–2022 Women’s Big Bash League because the WBBL schedule did not coincide with any Australia women’s international matches.
Charlotte Edwards took over as Sydney Sixers head coach after the season. Prior to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sawyer was named head coach of the New Zealand women’s national cricket team in June 2022. He was appointed head coach of the Women’s Premier League’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in February 2023.
