For the unversed, New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr secured gold in the men’s Olympic high jump on Saturday with a remarkable leap of 2.36 meters, following an intense and exhausting final.

This victory marked New Zealand’s first-ever medal in the event. The defending champion, Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim, earned bronze with a season-best jump of 2.34 meters, setting the stage for a fierce competition between Kerr and American Shelby McEwen for the gold.

Both athletes began to tire and were unable to clear 2.38 meters after three attempts. The bar was then lowered to 2.36 meters, and later to 2.34 meters, which Kerr was the first to clear, securing his victory.

Overcome with joy and relief, he celebrated by running to the center of the field and collapsing onto the grass. McEwen, despite narrowly missing gold, achieved a personal best.

About Hamish Kerr

Born on August 17, 1996, Hamish Kerr, is a New Zealand based high jumper who won gold in the men’s high jump at the Summer Olympics 2024.

Standing at 198 cm (6 ft 6 in), Kerr also claimed gold at the World Indoor Championships 2024, having previously won bronze in 2022. Kerr secured gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022 and holds the Oceanian indoor record, sharing the Oceanian outdoor record.

In June 2019, Kerr equaled the New Zealand national record with a jump of 2.30 meters, winning gold at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Townsville. He went on to compete at the Universiade in Italy, in July, and later at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, in October.

The 27-year-old athlete broke the national record in February 2021 with a jump of 2.31 meters at Newtown Park Stadium in Wellington. He later finished 10th in the men’s high jump final at the postponed Tokyo Olympics 2020, clearing 2.30 meters.

In March 2022, Kerr competed at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, where he surpassed Roger Te Puni’s 39-year-old New Zealand indoor record with a bronze medal-winning jump of 2.31 meters, tied with Gianmarco Tamberi.

That year, he won the Oceania Athletics Championships in June with a jump of 2.24 meters, and in August, he secured gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a jump of 2.25 meters.

His mum Bridget is a speech therapist, and his dad Andrew is a cardiologist at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital. He is dating girlfriend Maddie and is a girlfriend by religion.
