His 12-year Test career saw him play 64 Tests for the Black Caps and win the first-ever World Test Championship. After learning he wouldn’t be playing for the XI in the Test series against Australia that begins on Thursday (February 29) in Wellington, Wagner took his decision.

Neil Wagner is a New Zealand Test cricket player who represents both the Northern Districts and New Zealand sides. The 37-year-old was born on March 13, 1986, in Pretoria, Transvaal Province, South Africa.

Neil Wagner was shown to have clocked 160 kmph during the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at University Oval in Dunedin but the mistake was attributed to a low flying seagull which interfered with the speed gun.

In his early days he bowled with good pace, regularly above 140km/h, and got the ball to swing both ways. After a four-year stand-down period, Neil Wagner was given his Black Caps debut against the West Indies in 2012.

Neil Wagner attended Afrikaanse Hoer Seunskool as a high school student, where he played for the first team, as in his early career. He is a left-handed batsman and left-arm medium-fast bowler who visited Zimbabwe and Bangladesh with South African Academy sides. He relocated to New Zealand in 2008 to play Test cricket.

He was an Otago player from 2008 to 2018 and a Northerns player from 2007–2008. Wagner competed for New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship, which they won in 2019–2021.

Wagner competed in the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship as a member of the New Zealand team. His retirement from international cricket was announced on February 27, 2024.

With 260 Test wickets at a strike rate of 52.7, he will conclude his career in the international game sixth on New Zealand’s all-time charts. The only other New Zealander with more than 100 Test wickets is the illustrious Sir Richard Hadlee.
