Tripathi, who is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, will now take charge of his new office on April 30, 2024.

Following the new appointment, the defense ministry stated in an official statement:
The government has appointed Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff as the next Chief of the Naval Staff with effect from the afternoon of April 30, 2024.”

Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, PVSM, AVSM, NM is a long-time Flag officer in the Indian Navy who was born on May 15, 1964. He is the newly appointed Chief of the Naval Staff after previously serving as the 38th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. As an Indian Naval officer, Tripathi has decades of experience serving in various command, staff, and instructional posts. He is currently 59 years old.
Education
During his childhood, Tripathi attended the Sainik School Rewa and National Defense Academy. He later underwent courses at the Naval War College, Goa, and Naval War College, USA.
Dinesh K Tripathi military career
Tripathi has had a long and distinguished military career spanning almost 30 years. He started off in the executive branch of the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985, as a communication and electronic warfare specialist. Prior to taking over as the new Vice Chief of Navy, he had served in various roles, including the post of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. Vice Admiral Tripathi has previously served in a variety of command, staff and instructional appointments and even commanded INS Vinash.
He has also served as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director Network Centric Operations, and Principal Director of Naval Plans at New Delhi. Tripathi also served as Flag Officer Commanding of the Eastern Fleet as a Rear Admiral. Notably, Tripathi also served as Commandant of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala.
