The tourist, identified as 26 year old Navya from Zahirabad in the Sangareddy district of Telangana, fell onto the slab roof of a house during her paragliding excursion.
Following the incident, authorities swiftly apprehended the paraglider pilot involved and have commenced legal procedures by filing a case. Moreover, as a precautionary measure, all paragliding activities at the Dobhi paragliding site have been temporarily halted.
District officials have initiated an inquiry to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are particularly focused on investigating whether the pilot adhered to proper protocols, including taking off from an approved paragliding site and possessing all required documentation.
According to Kullu’s Tourism officer, Sunaina Sharma, the unfortunate accident was attributed to “human error.” She clarified that the site and equipment were sanctioned, the pilot was duly registered, and there were no adverse weather conditions.
However, reports indicate that the pilot may have neglected to adequately secure the safety belt of the tourist, resulting in her fall from a significant height during the paragliding session.
Body Underwent Post-Mortem Examination
The body underwent a postmortem examination at the Regional Hospital Kullu, following which it is being released to the family for final rites.
Legal action has been initiated, with the pilot being charged under IPC sections 336 (endangering personal safety of others) and 334 (voluntarily causing hurt). Additionally, a magisterial inquiry has been launched into the incident.
Regrettably, this is not the first such occurrence at Dobhi, a renowned paragliding destination in Kullu district. Similar incidents occurred on December 24, 2022, resulting in the death of Suraj Shah from Maharashtra, and on June 15, 2022, claiming the lives of Aditya Sharma from Ambala and his pilot, Krishan Gopal, in a paragliding crash near the take-off site in Dobhi.
Himachal Pradesh offers numerous paragliding sites, including Bir-Billing, Bandla Dhar, Solang Valley, and Junga near Shimla.
