As per reports, Nandu Paswan had long coveted the settlement where Dalit families had built their homes, drawn by its location along the riverbank. Allegations suggest that in November 2023, an earlier violent incident occurred when Paswan’s men reportedly opened fire in the same area. Despite an FIR being lodged, the villagers recall that no action was taken by the authorities at that time.

Who is Nandu Paswan?

Nandu Paswan, a retired police officer residing in Pranpur, stepped down from his role with the Bihar Police in 2014. His family includes his son, Nageshwar Paswan, who serves as the ward member for ward number 16 in Krishnagar, and his daughter-in-law, who is employed at an Aanganwadi. He is a Dalit Hindu.

According to Nandu Paswan’s daughter-in-law, he had ownership of four decimals of land, which had been the subject of a dispute since 1995. Witnesses reported that several individuals entered the village of Dabang, initiating gunfire before setting the homes ablaze.

Why Nandu Paswan is arrested?

On Wednesday night, a group of men attacked the Dalit colony on Paswan’s instructions. Armed with guns and torches, they reportedly set fire to over 80 homes, reducing the settlement to ashes. The residents of Manjhi Tola, many of whom were laborers, could do nothing but watch in despair as their homes and belongings were consumed by flames.

In the aftermath of the attack, the police arrested 10 individuals, including Nandu Paswan, whom they identified as the mastermind. The search for other suspects is ongoing. Although the land officially belongs to the Bihar government, Paswan and his group were falsely claiming ownership—a long-standing dispute that had now erupted into violence.

Bihar’s Scheduled Caste and Tribe Welfare Minister, Janak Ram, expressed his sorrow over the incident, while reaffirming the NDA government’s dedication to safeguarding vulnerable sections of society. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the attack, raising concerns over the rising violence against marginalized communities.
