After many fatalities and several injuries from violent clashes, tensions have finally decreased in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. The curfew in the Banbhoolpura police station area, where the disturbance started last week when the Uttarakhand government demolished an “illegal structure,” was lifted on Saturday by the Nainital Police.

While relief has been granted in some areas, the night curfew remains in effect from 8 pm to 6 am in Gaujajali, FSI, and Godown. The Nainital Police’s most recent order extends the night curfew from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the remaining Banbhoolpura police station districts.
Amid all this, District Magistrate Vandana Singh has emerged as a key figure in diffusing the tension, earning praise as a hero. However, her decision to demolish an ‘illegally’ constructed madarsa in Banbhoolpura has sparked criticism from some quarters.
On social media, many were criticizing the demolition of the 20-year-old Mariam Masjid and using the hashtag #ArrestVandanaSingh. Others called for the DM’s arrest, accusing her of unfair behavior.
Even with the criticism, Vandana Singh has garnered acclaim for her prompt response to putting an end to the disturbances. On the X platform, a user praised her efforts to remove unlawful occupancies from Haldwani and emphasized the necessity for administrators like her.

Who is Vandana Singh?
Vandana Singh is an Indian IAS officer belonging to the Uttarakhand cadre. She has been in the news because she faces both criticism and support for her role in diffusing the recent Haldwani violence.
She is a resident of Nasrullgarh, Haryana, and studied Sanskrit honors at Kanya Gurukul Bhiwani. She later completed her LLB at Agra’s BR Ambedkar University.
35 year old Vandana Singh is a 2012-batch IAS officer of the Uttarakhand cadre.
As per media reports, Vandana Singh is married to Amit Chauhan, who is also an IAS officer of the 2012 batch.

Her career
Upon her first try at the UPSC examination, Vandana Singh achieved the 8th place at the age of 24. She was soon named Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand’s Chief Development Officer, becoming the district’s first female CDO.
Vandana Singh Chauhan’s father sent her brother to study overseas because of this. Vandana expressed her intention to study after observing this. Following this, she was accepted into a Moradabad Gurukul.
She became an inspiration to many rural girls who were unable to attend English-medium schools. Last year, to recognise her appointment as the DM, she was given the guard of honour at the collectorate and she is renowned for making decisions quickly and acting without delay. According to certain media sources, Singh was also the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign’s brand ambassador from 2017 to 2020.
Vandana Singh took on the role of DM of Rudraprayag in 2020, and then in 2021 she was appointed DM of Almora. Since 17th May 2023, she has served as the DM of Nainital.
