In a major decision, the district court in Odisha handed down a life sentence for former Communist MLA Nagireddy Narayan Reddy on Monday.

This decision was made in relation to the unfortunate occurrence in June 1998, when Reserve Police Officer Binoba Meher was killed during a dispute over Tata Steel’s plans to acquire land for a steel factory.
The regrettable occurrence happened during a meeting that the government had called in Sindhigaon village when tensions between demonstrators and police officials grew. Sadly, the subsequent encounter resulted in Inspector Meher’s death.
After this occurrence, a complaint under Section 302 of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) was filed against Nagireddy Narayan Reddy and 22 other people, eight of whom had already passed away.
The additional district judge (ADJ)-3 court in Berhampur found Reddy and 12 others guilty of involvement in the death of Inspector Meher. Reddy, who had previously served as the assembly representative for the Chatrapur seat from 2004 to 2009, announced his desire to appeal the decision alongside the other guilty persons in higher courts.

He is a native of Chamakhandi village in Odisha. Reddy was a prominent union member who led the opposition to land acquisition. Moreover, Reddy was detained in December 2011 for using violence to protest the South Korean steel giant POSCO’s acquisition of property in Erasama; POSCO ultimately abandoned the project.
Nagireddy Narayan Reddy was also held responsible for inciting violence when Tata Steel first proposed building a steel mill near Gopalpur in Ganjam, requiring the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation’s purchase of almost 3,000 acres of land.
The corporation eventually abandoned its plan as a result of the local people’s adamant opposition to the property purchase. However, Tata Steel decided to establish an industrial park and special economic zone (SEZ) on the purchased site in 2010.
Although incarcerated, he was elected to the Odisha legislature in 2004 from the Chhatrapur assembly segment. He is currently 67 years old.
