Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas, who eventually won the gold, and Sreeshankar both recorded best leaps of 8.08 meters. Nairn was declared the gold medalist because Sreeshankar’s 7.84m was better than his second-best mark of 7.98m.
According to the regulations, the jumper with the superior second-best attempt will be rated ahead if two jumpers are tied on the same distance. In his fourth try, Sreeshankar claimed that he first believed he had a large legal jump, which would have earned him gold. However, the new method ruled that his leap was foul.

Who Is Murali Sreeshankar?
Murali Sreeshankar is India’s well-known long jumper. He has recently been in the news because his long jump of about 8.08 meters turned into a foul which cost him a gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022.
On March 27, 1999, he was born in Palakkad, Kerala, India. He is from an athletic family as his both parents are athletes. Initially, he was a sprinter, but when he was 13 years old, he switched it long jump.
His mother, K. S. Bijimol, earned a silver medal in the 800 meters at the 1992 Asian Junior Athletics Championships. His father, S. Murali, won a silver medal in the triple jump and the 800 meters in the South Asian Games. He also has one sister whose name is Sreeparvathy and she is a heptathlete.
He did his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kanjkode. As of August 2019, he is doing a BSc in mathematics at Government Victoria College in Palakkad.
Presently, he is 23 years old. He height stands at 5 feet 11 inches.
His Career
Murali Sreeshankar won bronze in a leap of 7.47 meters at the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Gifu in 2018. He later broke the record for the longest jump in the national open athletics championships in Bhubaneswar in September 2018 with a leap of 8.20 meters.
At the Federation Cup in Patiala in March 2021, Sreeshankar set a new mark by jumping 8.26 meters to earn a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics. He missed the final in the Olympics after recording a leap of 7.69 meters in the qualifying round.
He became the first Indian man to win a silver medal in the long jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a leap of 8.08 meters.
