The troubles for independent legislator Geeta Jain seem to be mounting after she slapped engineer Shubham Patil.
Shubham Patil is a junior engineer assigned to Ward No. 6 in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in Kashimira, Thane district. He has filed a complaint against Jain with the Kashimira police. Although her party distanced itself from her act and opponents called for her to be punished, she has not shown any remorse.
The Slapgate Incident Involving Geeta Jain and Shubham Patil
The incident was reported from Kashimira’s Penkarpada neighbourhood, where Patil’s anti-encroachment team from MBMC had gone to knock down a tenement.
On June 16, when it was raining, the engineer and his team allegedly forcibly removed the residents, which also included an elderly couple and a six-month-old toddler. Geeta Jain was incensed to learn of the MBMC team’s autocratic and inhumane actions, so she went to the scene and confronted the concerned engineer and his colleague, Soni while reminding them of a government resolution (GR) that forbade the civic body from demolishing any kind of residential structures during the monsoon season.
According to Jain, the engineer was shamelessly laughing while family members in the tenement were crying, which she could not stand and smacked him with.
The BJP’s Official Statement on the Incident
On Wednesday, the deputy chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, said, “We don’t support such behaviour. At times, people become enraged and have bad tempers. However, no one has the right to harm another person physically.”
He added that elected officials should take extra care with how they conduct themselves publicly.
Geeta Jain’s Political Career
After being passed up for the ticket in the Mira-Bhayandar Assembly constituency in 2019, Jain turned against her party. She later defeated independent candidate and BJP MLA Narendra Mehta.
During her campaign for the hotly contested election, she referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by name.
Jain later merged with the Shiv Sena. However, she left the party in June 2022 as a result of internal conflicts. She joined the BJP once more as the Sena’s Eknath Shinde faction and the BJP were forming the government.
Jain first held a corporate position in 2002. Her politics were restricted to the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation for more than 15 years. She was chosen to serve a second term as a corporator in 2012 and was elected mayor in 2015. 2017 saw her re-election as a corporator.
The family details and husband of the 58 year old aren’t known.
