Mhatre will partner alongside Prithvi Shaw this Ranji season, scoring 52 and 22 during his first game against Baroda. Mumbai are now playing against Maharashtra in their second Ranji Trophy game at the MCA-BKC ground.

The right-handed opening batter, playing just his third First-Class game, handled the opponent bowlers with ease, getting to his first 100 in just 133 balls at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai against Maharashtra.

Ayush Mhatre bio

Ayush Mhatre is a young and upcoming teenage Indian cricketer who was born on July 16, 2007, and he is currently just 17 years old. The teenager recently made headlines after featuring as the opening batsman for the Mumbai cricket team in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024. The youngster is focused on making it big and has cut himself off social media for the past few months.

The Virar-born Mhatre made his First-Class debut earlier this month for the Mumbai side in the Irani Cup.

His mum is Jagruti and dad is Yogesh while his grandfather is grandfather [Laxmikant Naik who have regularly accompanied him from his residence in Virar to grounds in Bandra and Matunga for his matches.

He was earlier studying at St Joseph’s (Virar) after which he joined Don Bosco [Matunga] where he studied till Class V. He then moved to Rizvi Springfield (Bandra), who permitted home schooling before shifting to IES VN Sule Guruji where he was coached by Gopal Koli.

Career and stats

Ayush Mhatre started out playing when he was just six years old and got serious around the age of 10. Ayush joined Don Bosco High School in Matunga, where his grandfather Laxmikant Naik (Nana) a former railway employee, took him every day. His grandfather took him to practice, every morning before school, before he head to Churchgate to attend another practice.

The now 17-year-old boy and his grandfather would wake up at 4:15 am, every morning and catch the 5 am train from Virar for his practice sessions. However, when he was around 12, his grandfather had to undergo an eye operation, which hampered the daily commute. However, Ayush’s uncle Vijay Mhatre stepped in to support. During that time, Ayush got selected for the under-14 selection trials at the age of 12 for a reputed club-MIG.

Since his uncle stayed near MIG, he took in Ayush under his carer to complete his cricketing dream. However, Covid-19 hampered his chances and Ayush couldn’t play in any BCCI tournament for the following two years. Ayush Mhatre eventually got picked for the under-16 selection trials for the Kalpesh Koli tournament. He soon began featuring for an U-19 team as well in a local tournament. However, he faced another issue when his father Yogesh lost his job. Despite the setback, his parents persevered and his father now works at the Vasai Corporation bank as a clerk.

The MCA picked Ayush Mhatre for the upcoming KSCA Trophy during the off-season camp, after scoring 52 and 172 against Gujarat. He also eventually got selected for the Irani Cup and the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
