Syrian refugee pins down assailant in Hamburg knife attack
An age 19 Syrian refugee named Muhammad Al Muhammad who is a Muslim by religion recently became a hero after pinning down an assailant during a knife attack. Muhamad was waiting for a train back home to Buchholz after visiting his friend in Hamburg when he saw a 39-year-old unnamed woman attacking other people with a knife on the platform. However, instead of fleeing like the other people around, Muhammad ran towards the danger.
He initially saw a Chechen man kick the attacker in the knee, before knocking her to the ground. Muhammad quickly went in to restrain her and pressed her hands against her backpack to stop her from getting up. Muhammad later stated that:
The woman didn’t scream, she didn’t resist.”
Upon the arrival of the police, Muhammad raised his hands and backed away slowly to avoid confusion. Authorities soon went on to arrest the woman, who was reportedly in psychological distress. They have since placed her in psychiatric care and all 18 victims are now in stable condition.
“I bolstered my courage because I saw people running away screaming, and I wanted to protect them,” al-Muhammad said. Together with another man, he stopped the stabbing woman and was rewarded with a cappuccino by the police afterwards. “I ran toward her, with a Chechen. He tripped her. Then I held her down and called the police,” said al-Muhammad, who lives in a shared apartment in Buchholz.
