After leaving on a trip together, a racing driver named Douglas Costa and his girlfriend Mariana Giordano both passed away from an unexplained illness.
Following their visit to a rural area in Campinas, Brazil, on May 27, the couple developed symptoms including fever, pain, and red rashes on June 3.

Douglas Costa, who was competing in the AMG Cup Brazil competition, was quickly sent to a private hospital in Jundiai on June 7. Mariana, who was a dentist by profession, had already been admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo two days prior.
Unfortunately, both people passed away suddenly within a span of four hours; Costa’s demise was announced to the local media on June 8. Costa was laid to rest in Itupeva, while Mariana’s funeral was held in Sao Paulo.
At the time of their deaths, Douglas was 42 years old and Mariana Giordano was 36 years old.
AMG Cup Brasil expressed their condolences to the bereaved families and acknowledged Douglas Costa’s admirable qualities and the void he would leave in the hearts of those who knew him. Mariana’s brother, Marcio Giordana, also paid tribute to their relationship and their deep connection.
What did the authorities have to say about their deaths?
According to the Epidemiological Surveillance of Jundiai, Douglas Costa and his girlfriend may have caught leptospirosis, spotted fever, or dengue, all of which are spread by mosquitoes and have symptoms including headaches and joint discomfort.
Leptospirosis can cause meningitis and renal failure, whereas spotted fever appears as a severe febrile illness that leaves skin patches.
According to reports, both Douglas Costa and his girlfriend Mariana Giordano traveled to Camanducaia on June 3 and 4. The City Hall said that given the date of their symptoms and their trip to Monte Verde, it is improbable that they caught spotted fever there because of the illness’ incubation period.
However, thorough epidemiological investigations will be carried out to safeguard the health of residents and tourists, even though the probable source of contamination seems to originate from outside the district.
