Dutee Chand recalls that she had no understanding what “lesbian” meant in 2019. When she her partner (Monalisa Das) for the first time in 2017 at a village festival where she traded phone numbers. The girl got in touch with her often, talking about her performances, and how much glory she was bringing to our country.
She got close, sharing joys, pains, anxieties, and every detail. After some months, they realised that they would like to spend the rest lives together, and even get married. She never thought about whether it’s right or wrong to think like that.
Everything felt perfectly normal to her. This is what India’s current women’s 100m champion, who competed at the 2016 and 2020 Olympian Dutee Chand, told MW.
Mother And Sister Becoming Uncomfortable After The Disclosure
Her partner’s parents accepted her, but Dutee’s mother and sister were uncomfortable and went public with this information. Dutee chose to take matters into her own hands when the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) suspended her from athletics in 2014 for alleged female hyperandrogenism (the judgement was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2015).
Dutee Chand told ESPN that she wanted to come out after the Tokyo Olympics [then set for 2020]. But since her sister made it public before she could. Her biggest concern was being robbed of the opportunity to compete. She had previously waged a lengthy battle over the hyperandrogenism rule to obtain the opportunity to run again.
Thankfully, her suspicions were unfounded, and she got support from the sporting community, society, and her family and friends. The Athletics Federation told her that this information will not damage my sporting future. And other sportspeople complimented me on her decision.
Supreme Courts Decision Came As A Blessing
Social media also supported her. Olympian Dutee Chand was reassured by several messages that the Supreme Court had allowed same-sex unions. They told Olympian Dutee Chand that soon, her parents would also embrace it, and that she has every right to choose the way she wanted to spend my life.
Olympian Dutee Chand never anticipated the level of response she would get from everyone in the globe, especially the LGBTQ+ community. She just worried about the sports federation and her profession. Getting interviewed by magazines, being on their cover, or being invited to TV shows was something Olympian Dutee Chand could have never anticipated.
She was glad that others have spoken up after her. Today, if someone comes to her in a similar scenario, Olympian Dutee Chand advises them to quote her example, and go ahead with their decisions.

She is also pleased to see that parents are understanding their children. And that society is becoming more open and tolerant due to education and changing perspectives. She’s no less than a celebrity, of course, so her coming out effects the culture and thoughts of many.
