PCB elects Mohsin Naqvi as new chairman

The Pakistan Cricket Board PCB has officially announced Mohsin Naqvi as their newly elected chairman of the board. The announcement came on February 6 (Tuesday) following the PCB Board of Governors (BoG) meeting at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

During a media statement, the PCB stated that they have unanimously chosen Mohsin for the position, for a three-year term. Notably, Mohsin Naqvi will be the fourth individual to serve as the PCB chairman in the last four years. He will replace Ramiz Raja, who assumed the role in September 2021, after Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf.

Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi is the newly elected chairman of the PCB who was born on October 28, 1978, in Lahore, Pakistan. He is currently serving as the caretaker chief minister of Punjab province. Mohsin Naqvi is a highly regarded personality in Pakistan with a well-established administrative and corporate background. He is currently 45 years old as of February, 2024.

Mohsin obtained his early education at Crescent Model School before completing his graduation from the Government College University. After completing his graduation, Naqvi moved to the USA for higher education in media sciences.

Career

After completing his studies, he joined CNN as a producer in the USA, and eventually became the Regional Head of South Asia. Later, in 2009, he founded his own company, ‘City Media Group’, which currently oversees six TV channels as well as a newspaper in Pakistan. Naqvi currently serves as the caretaker chief minister of the Punjab province of Pakistan. Earlier this year, on January 22, 2024, the PCB’s chief patron Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar appointed him as a member of the governing board. Despite his new appointment, Mohsin will most likely remain in his position as caretaker chief minister for some few months.

Mohsin Naqvi set to take up major responsibilities

Following his new appointment, Naqvi will have to take on a series of major responsibilities, starting off with overseeing the upcoming Pakistan Super League, which begins on February 17, 2024.  Following this, the new chairman will also have to take up the role of organizing the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Notably, this is the only ICC event that Pakistan are granted this decade. Mohsin will have to take care of logistical and administrative preparations, along with the construction of suitable facilities that can accommodate up to eight teams simultaneously. Pakistan has so far never hosted such a major event since the 1996 World Cup.
