After almost thirty years of marriage, composer AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu announced their separation Tuesday night. Bassist Mohini Dey, who plays in AR Rahman’s band, unexpectedly disclosed that she and her husband, composer Mark Hartsuch, had split up as well.

They wrote, “Dear friends, family, fans, and followers, with a heavy heart, Mark and I announce that we have separated. First, as a commitment to our friends and family, this is a mutual understanding between us. While we remain great friends, we both have decided that we want different things in life and separation through mutual agreement was the best way to proceed.”

The note continued, “We will still be working on several projects together, including MaMoGi and Mohini Dey groups.”

Mohini Dey who is an Indian bass guitarist from Kolkata was born on 20 July 1996 in Mumbai. Her father Sujoy was a session musician. Before his daughter was three, he saw her musical ability and started to foster it. When Dey was nine or ten years old, she got her first bass guitar.

Mohini is multilingual, fluent in Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, and English and in 2024, she was invited to join Willow Smith’s new band.

Mohini is also a member of the band MaMoGi in which she collaborates with her husband, saxophonist Mark Hartsuch. Mohini has a net worth of Rs.1-5 crore.

She began performing at the age of eleven, demonstrating her prodigy status. Ranjit Barot, a friend of her father, saw her talent and invited her to tour with his band. Louis Banks, an influential jazz musician, also served as her tutor.

Mark Hartsuch, a saxophonist, was her spouse. In a joint Instagram post, she and her spouse declared their separation.

Mohini Dey career

August 2023 saw the release of Mohini Dey’s self-titled debut album. She performs with her husband, Mark Hartsuch, and drummer Gino Banks in the band MaMoGi. Steve Vai, Marco Minnemann, Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, Jason Richardson, Dewa Budjana, Zakir Hussain, Sivamani, A. R. Rahman, and Willow Smith are among the people she has worked with.

Mohini Dey released her self-titled first album in August 2023 and has played with AR Rahman in more than 40 gigs around the world.

She received an invitation to join Smith’s new band in 2024. Dey is fluent in Bengali, Hindi, English, and Marathi.
