According to court documents, the man suspected of wounding 12 people by tossing Molotov cocktails in a “act of terrorism” during a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, has been charged with a federal hate crime and 16 state offenses, including attempted first-degree murder.

Soliman’s wife, Hayam Salah Alsaid Ahmed Elgamal, 41, their daughter Habiba Mohamed Sabry Farag Soliman, 18, two more daughters and two sons were all detained by ICE and facing a swift removal before US District Court Judge Gordon Gallagher stepped in and blocked their deportation.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45 who is a Muslim by religion, was born in Egypt, lived in Kuwait for 17 years and moved three years ago to Colorado Springs, where he lived with his wife and five children.

Soliman filed for asylum a month after arriving, and listed his wife and their five children as dependents in Denver and was also granted a work authorization in March 2023 that expired this past March.

The Egyptian national is charged with tossing gasoline bombs at a pro-Israeli rally in Boulder, Colorado and injuring a dozen people. He planned his attack for a year and used Molotov cocktails instead of a gun because his noncitizen status blocked him from buying firearms.

Soliman was in the country illegally, having overstayed a tourist visa and an expired work permit. He lived in Kuwait for 17 years and moved three years ago to Colorado Springs, about 100 miles (161 km) south of Boulder.

Soliman had entered the United States in August 2022 on a tourist visa, filed for asylum the following month, and remained in the country after his visa expired in February 2023.

Soliman had planned for a year to carry out the attack, which unfolded on the Pearl Street Mall, a popular pedestrian shopping district near the University of Colorado and he threw two lit Molotov cocktails at individuals participating in the pro-Israel gathering,” yelling, “Free Palestine” as they ignited in the crowd.

16 cocktails were found next to him during his arrest.

“He researched on YouTube how to make Molotov Cocktails, purchased the ingredients to do so, and constructed them,” the 45-year-old suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, said to authorities, according to federal court filings.

In state court documents, it was stated that Soliman “had to use Molotov cocktails [for the attack] after he was denied the purchase of a gun due to him not being a legal citizen,” despite having taken a concealed carry course to learn how to shoot a gun.

According to state and federal documents, Soliman, a husband and father of five, claimed he had been preparing the attack on Sunday afternoon for a year but decided to wait until his daughter’s high school graduation last Thursday to execute it.

His daughter, Habiba Soliman graduated from Thomas Maclaren State Charter School in Colorado Springs, requiring an Arabic-to -English translator and has been accepted to two colleges. She has revealed that her family moved from Kuwait as she couldn’t afford to attend medical school there.

According to the records, her father said that no one was aware of his preparations and that he anticipated dying during the assault.

On Monday afternoon, Soliman showed up for his initial state court appearance from the Boulder County Jail, where the judge maintained his $10 million bond.

He admitted that he was prohibited from contacting the victims by a protective order, which he had received and understood.

He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty on the federal hate crime charge because he was also charged with attempted-murder in state court after 12 people were injured in the anti-Semitic attack.

Investigation

The Department of Homeland Security does not normally conduct criminal investigations; instead, local law enforcement and the FBI do.

President Donald Trump’s administration’s response to Sunday’s incident in Boulder, which left 12 people injured, has focused heavily on Soliman’s immigration status.

Authorities quickly claimed that he had overstayed a tourist visa and was therefore in the country “illegally.”

However, they also recognized that he had submitted an asylum application and received a work permit.
