Why Mohamed Mogouchkov is detained by the police?
This incident caused injuries to at least two individuals, in addition to the tragic loss of the teacher. Among the injured are a teacher in non-critical condition and a security agent who sustained multiple stab wounds. It is worth noting that this attack occurred on the same day when leaders of Hamas, a Palestinian militant organization known for its history of deadly attacks in Israel, urged Muslims worldwide to participate in protests on a day they referred to as the day of Jihad.
While it has not been officially confirmed if this attack in Arras is directly linked to the call for action by Hamas, it’s important to consider that Mogouchkov’s brother had previously been sentenced to eighteen months in prison for disseminating ISIS propaganda online. Additionally, there are reports indicating that Mogouchkov had been recognized as sympathetic to ISIS.
The assault occurs in the backdrop of escalating tensions within France’s substantial Muslim and Jewish populations, driven by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Nevertheless, law enforcement officials have asserted that there is no evidence suggesting a connection to the Middle East. This incident takes place nearly three years after the tragic and gruesome murder of another educator, Samuel Paty, who was beheaded at his school located just outside of Paris.
How France president Emmanuel Macron reacted to the incident?
The Lycee Gambetta-Carnot High School in Arras, northern France, was the unfortunate location of this incident. French law enforcement and emergency services promptly established a secure perimeter in response to the attack. It was noted that the assailant, Mogouchkov, had been a former student at the school, and upon the attack, he shouted “Allahu Akbar,” as reported by Sliman Hamzi, one of the first responding police officers.
During his visit to the school, President Emmanuel Macron expressed his strong condemnation for the brutality of Islamist terrorism. He urged the French population to remain unified in the wake of the assault and emphasized the importance of not succumbing to fear or allowing any divisive elements to disrupt their unity. Additionally, President Macron informed the public that law enforcement successfully thwarted another potential attack in a different region of France.
