Ariel Jacob Helwani is a Canadian-American sports journalist born on July 8, 1982 in Montreal, Canada. Helwani graduated from Syracuse University back in 2004. He is best known for his coverage of mixed martial arts and his work at MMA Fighting.

He has also worked for major sports networks like Fox and ESPN. Interestingly, Ariel has won the MMA Journalist of the Year award at the World MMA Awards every year since 2010.

Interestingly, Ariel Helwani started out his career early on in his first semester of college at show sport on WERW. He eventually gained popularity from the show and landed a summer internship with NBC for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Sadly however, Ariel had to drop out after suffering an ankle injury.

Ariel Helwani later worked as a sports intern for HBO back in 2003 before eventually joining the organization full time in 2004 as a Sports Production Assistant after graduation. While at HBO, Helwani worked on documentaries about the 1999 Women’s World Cup final and the 1985 NCAA men’s basketball finals.

He eventually left HBO to work at Paramount, which he ended up quitting after a week of work. Following his decision to quit, Helwani went solo and created an MMA sports website. Through the website, Helwani provided professional reporting of the back then up-and-coming sport.

Ariel Helwani MMA career

2 years after graduating, Ariel Halwani joined MMA Fighting in 2006. Ariel worked as a host for the sport and also hosted the MMA Hour podcast. Moreover, he also started co-hosting Fight Club, which was a Sirius XM radio show. Later on, Helwani also became a host for MMA Beat Show on YouTube. Helwani’s career trajectory eventually kept on going on after that and has since worked on several roles.

While working at MMA fighting, Helwani also contributed to FOX, working as an MMA Insider for Fox’s UFC Tonight Show, as well as the pre and post-UFC event programming. However, Helwani got fired from Fox in 2016 after Dana White banned Helwani from attending any UFC event.

2 years later in 2018, Ariel joined ESPN in on a 3-year contract. While working with ESPN, Ariel also co-hosted the Ariel and The Bad Guy show with Chael Sonnon. He also co-hosted the Helwani and DC show alongside Daniel Cormier.

After three years of working with the company, Ariel left the company in 2021 and went back to MMA Fighting. He restarted the MMA Hour podcast and eventually signed a deal with Spotify to start the Ariel Helwani Show on the podcast. Ariel currently serves as the interim vice president of the Mixed Martial Arts Journalists Association.
