Back then, Warriors general manager Chris Mullin stated:

We both felt it was something that we wanted based on the way Mike performed, the way he conducted himself, and the way we run our organization.”

However, things took a rough turn as the Warriors had secured other huge contracts like Adonal Foyle and Derek Fisher. As such, a lot of fans incited criticism against the signing of Dunleavy. As a result, Dunleavy eventually lost his starting small forward position for a few games in the 2005–06 season. Another reason for this was also due to his shooting slump.

However, he managed to regain his starting spot later in the season, and by the 2006–07 campaign, he started out at his new position of power forward. However, the Warriors faced some early setbacks that season, which forced the then Warriors head coach Don Nelson to switch up his starting lineup. This switch eventually ended up sending Dunleavy back to the bench for improving team chemistry and better winning chances.

In the following years, he played for several teams including the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Atlanta Hawks. And eventually retired as a player in the 2017-2018 season.
