The Gujarat Giants have announced their head coach for the forthcoming season, only days before the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 season kicks off.

Michael Klinger has been named the new head coach by the Giants, taking over for Rachael Haynes. The coaching staff for the 2024 tournament, which is set to begin on February 23, will include Klinger as well as mentor Mithali Raj and bowling coach Nooshin Al Khadeer.

Who is Michael Klinger?
Michael Klinger is a former first-class cricket player who was born on July 4, 1980 in Kew, Victoria, Australia and until his retirement in 2019, he held the record for most runs scored in the Big Bash League. The 43-year-old stands 1.79 m (5 ft 10 in) tall.
He earned a Master of Business (Sport Management) and an Undergraduate Applied Science degree in Human Movement from Deakin University.
A look at Michael Klinger’s career so far
In Premier Cricket, Klinger was a player for Victoria and St Kilda Cricket Club until the 2008–09 season. After joining the South Australia Redbacks for the 2008–09 season, he was acknowledged as the State Player of the Year in both 2009 and 2010 and was elected their captain.
Kochi Tuskers Kerala purchased him as one of the 350 players that went under the hammer at the 2011 IPL Auction. Along with playing for Western Australia, he was signed by the Perth Scorchers in 2014. His retirement from first-class cricket was announced in March 2018.
Talking about his international career, When Klinger was 17 years old, he represented Australia and took home a gold medal at the Maccabiah Games in Israel in 1997. He was included in the Australian Twenty20 International (T20I) team in February 2017 for their series against Sri Lanka.
Since quitting the game, Klinger has served as head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL for two seasons starting in 2019–20. Most recently, he was Sydney Thunder’s assistant coach in the WBBL, where the team placed fourth.
