Who was Michael Ernst?
Michael Ernst became a part of the Navy in 2009. He attended the SEAL training in early 2010 after which he got assigned to the East Coast Special Warfare Unit where Michael Ernst was awarded a Silver Star, which is one of the military’s third-highest decorations for valor in combat.
He also received a number of other awards, having the Joint Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Fox News reported.
Following the death, Rear Adm. Keith Davids stated, “Michael Ernst was a dedicated NSW Sailor who applied his stunning talents, abilities, and skills towards a few of our nation’s hardest challenges, while selflessly mentoring his teammates. Mike and family will always be part of the NSW family, and he will never be forgotten, will be missed every moment.”
The cause of the accident has been investigated. “It would be inappropriate to comment further on any ongoing investigation until complete,” the Naval Special Warfare Command stated in a statement to Fox News reported.
Michael Ernst was not the first Navy SEAL who died in a training accident. In 2021, Cmdr. Brian Bourgeois also died during the fast-rope training which was held in Virginia Beach. Cmdr. Brian Bourgeois had a more than 20 years-long career in the military during which he was awarded a Bronze Star.
Brian died because of numerous injuries that he suffered because of a lack of communication in the aircraft. He was 43 years old when the incident took place and his family including his kids and wife were present with him when he took his last breath.
