Hamas captured Mia and other Israeli citizens while carrying out a massacre of many other partygoers in a surprise ambush.
Hamas release video footage of Israeli hostage Mia Shem
In the video that Hamas released, viewers can see Mia with her arm bandaged up while begging to be reunited with her family. Hamas released the footage on their Telegram channel on Monday, October 16. In the video, Mia revealed that Hamas have operated on her injured hand at a hospital in Gaza, and added that the militant group has taken care of her and even provided medicines.
She added:
“I returned early Saturday morning from Sderot; I was at a party. I was seriously injured in my hand. I underwent surgery on my hand at the hospital [in Gaza] for 3 hours.”
Mia further addresses the camera and stated:
“They are taking care of me, giving me medicine, everything is fine. I only ask that they bring me home as soon as possible to my parents, to my siblings. Get me out of here as soon as possible. Please.”
Through the video, Hamas have tried to portray themselves and their actions as humane, which the IDF have not taken well.

Mia Shem is a 21-year-old Israeli citizen who hails from Shoham, Israel and holds a French citizenship. Prior to the release of the video, Mia Shem’s mother, Karen Shem, has continuously been pleading for information about her missing daughter for days. According to the woman, she was relieved when she discovered that her daughter was still alive. While speaking with a reporter on Monday, Karen Shem revealed that she fell on the ground when she first saw the video. She explained how her daughter Mia had gone to a party to have fun and enjoy herself and up until now, she didn’t know if she was still dead or alive.
Just last week, Karen Shem also gave another interview where she expressed her concerns for her missing daughter. According to Karen, Mia disappeared after Palestine militants attacked the Supernova Music Festival on October 7, 2023. In that interview, Karen described her daughter as a very shrewd and creative person who loves to paint. Karen, who is a single mother, also revealed that Mia Shem shares a very close bond with her sister and two brothers. She further explained how Mia helped her raise her younger siblings.
Israel Defence Force (IDF) slams Hamas
Following the news about the abduction, the Israel Defence Force (IDF) came out to confirm the news while also slamming Hamas for their fake claims. The IDF confirmed that Hamas were currently in talks with the family of Mia Shem. Aside from that, the IDF issued a statement on X (Twitter), slamming Hamas for presenting itself as a humanitarian organization to the world, while carrying out a massacre.
The IDF pointed how Hamas portray themselves as humane in the video that they published. They further clarified that Hams were however, a horrific terrorist organization that has been responsible for murdering and abducting babies, children, men, women as well as the elderly.
It concluded by saying that they are currently deploying all intelligence and operational measures for the safe return of all hostages, including Mia Shem. Up until now, Hamas have reportedly killed over 4,000 people in Israel and Gaza ever since they attacked the country. Meanwhile, Hamas have taken over 200 Israelis, including children, into hostage.
