After the incident, she was rushed to Southfield’s Ascension Providence Hospital, where she was declared dead on June 5. However, as an organ donor, she remained on life support until June 8.

Jared Womble, Southfield Police Department spokesperson, emphasized the gravity of such incidents involving young individuals, ensuring they are treated as homicide until proven otherwise.
According to Sgt. Womble, no disfigurements or significant physical signs of assault were evident on Mia’s body. She was in the car with two others, one of whom is the driver who is currently cooperating with the investigation. An argument in the parking lot of the house party venue is believed to have taken place between the driver and another passenger.
Mia’s grief-stricken mother, Bianca Vanmeter, is ardently seeking answers surrounding the mysterious circumstances of her daughter’s demise. She passionately appealed for anyone with information to come forward, questioning why no one present at the scene had called for emergency services.
Remembering Mia Kanu: The aspiring veterinarian
Prior to her summer return to Michigan, Mia Kanu had been working diligently at a farm as part of TSU’s Agriculture Department. She had also held a position at the Richland Animal Clinic in Tennessee, showcasing her passion for animal care.
Dawn Elza, the clinic manager, fondly remembered Mia as someone with a strong passion for educating pet owners and who was intimately familiar with the boarding pets at the clinic. Mia’s ambitious dreams included owning a business and becoming a veterinarian. Her devotion to animals was evident in her adoption of a cat named Tails during her time at Tennessee State University.
