The middle child with two elder brothers and two younger brothers, Urbina was reared in a poor home with both of her parents. She moved to the US with her family when she was four years old. When Urbina was ten years old, her two older brothers began boxing at a nearby gym. She wanted to be included, but her brothers weren’t happy having their younger sister practise and battle alongside them. Eventually, her father gave her brothers the go-ahead to let her join them. She started boxing at just 75 pounds, and she appeared to enjoy the competition and sparring sessions.

Career

Urbina began going to the Phoenix, Arizona, facility of the Knockout Boxing Club in March 2007, which was co-founded by Urbina and her husband and current trainer, Andrews Soto. When the buddy of his brother who was also a fighter had died from a brain injury, Andrews Soto started teaching boxing.

The acquaintance left Soto’s brother a will that included enough boxing gear to outfit an entire gym. After receiving the gifts from his brother, Andrews Soto made the decision to create a boxing gym as a way of giving back to the neighbourhood. Soto had a basketball-playing background as well as a brief but fruitful amateur boxing career. He discovered his destiny as a boxing coach and started to have success with his Arizona travel teams.

Because Soto’s boxers had a history of success in Arizona boxing exhibitions, Urbina first sought him out. Soto put her through a demanding training schedule when they first met to test her dedication to the sport and determine if she would return. She persisted in working out with Soto, and the two of them connected over their shared commitment to and enthusiasm for boxing. Urbina continued to work out at the gym when she wed Soto, and with Soto’s guidance and her own dedication, she was able to compete worldwide.
