Mayra Brandt passes away

Mayra Brandt, who is a three-time CrossFit Games competitor, passed away on Sunday night, February 18, 2024. Prior to her death, Mayra shared two weeks ago that she would miss taking part in the 2024 CrossFit Games season due to various health problems. She shared the news in a social media post, saying:

take the time [I] need for surgery and recovery.”

According to reports, Mayra Brandt passed away after succumbing to complications from a recent surgery.

Mayra Brandt bio

Mayra Brandt was a very popular figure in the CrossFit community, and she was a native of Boca Raton, Florida. According to her Facebook account, her full name is Mayra Rodriguez Brandt. During her early years, Mayra attended the Spanish River Community High School. She was the proud owner of a gym and physical fitness centre called CrossFit Delray Beach. Aside from managing the gym, she also owned a sports and fitness instruction firm called Boca Extreme Cheer Company.

Mayra started out competing in professional CrossFit events during the 2017 and 2018 Masters 35-39 Division. Notably, she earned fifth place both times. The following year, in 2019, Mayra ranked 24th overall in the CrossFit Games Open as she struggled to recover from a knee injury and two subsequent surgeries. As a result of her rankings, she missed the Masters ticket by just 14 points. In 2020, she managed to qualify for the Masters 40-45 category, which subsequently got canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just two years later, the CrossFit veteran returned to take part in the Age Group Online Qualifier competition, where she finished in 45th place. Following the competition, she also participated in similar CrossFit events like The Bacon Beatdown (Elite Division), Masters Fitness Collective, Legends, Wodapalooza, etc.

Mayra was married to her husband Jay, with whom she had two kids, named Layla and TJ.

Tributes pour in for Mayra Brandt

Following her tragic death, tributes have come pouring in for Mayra from the entire CrossFit community. Jordan Alexandra, who is a member of the Boca Extreme Cheer Company, shared:

We didn’t talk every day after I left, but we stayed each other’s cheerleaders. You stayed my inspiration, and you will forever be. I love you, and knowing you’re gone doesn’t seem real… Forever Boca Always Extreme.”

Another CrossFit community member, Alex McCoy, shared:

I can’t believe that last Sunday I got to spend time with you, smiling, laughing, and reminiscing about the past and now you’re gone.”

He also went on to share how Brandt was not just his teammate but like his sister, who changed his life and the lives of many other athletes.
