Dhanbad resident Saraswati Devi made a promise to remain silent till the Ram temple was dedicated on the day of the 1992 destruction of the Babri Masjid. Known as ‘Mauni Mata’ in Ayodhya, she used written communication and sign language to interact with her family.
While she did break her silence for a short while—speaking for an hour at noon every day until 2020—she returned to total quiet the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the temple.
Hare Ram Agarwal, Devi’s 55-year-old son, shared,
The day Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992, my mother took a vow to observe silence till the Ram Mandir was constructed in Ayodhya. She has been jubilant ever since the date of consecration of the temple was announced.
Her son claims that she boarded the Ganga-Sutlej Express on Monday night and headed for Ayodhya from Dhanbad Railway Station. She is expected to break her silence on January 22.
He continued by saying that Devi has been asked to attend the Ram temple opening ceremony by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das’s supporters. Since then, Mauni Mata has become the talk of the town, with many people trying to know more about her. So, let’s find out more about her:
Who is Mauni Mata?
Mauni Mata is a renowned devotee of Lord Ram. She has been in the news because she is going to end her three-decade-long ‘maun vrat’ while witnessing the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Her real name is Saraswati Devi, and she hails from Dhanbad, Jharkhand. She was married to Devkinandan Agarwal, who passed away in 1986. Mauni Mata is the mother of eight children. She does, however, now reside in Dhaiya, Dhanbad, with her second-eldest son, Nand Lal Agarwal, a Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) executive.
Her intense spiritual practices are the center of her existence. Innu Agarwal, her daughter-in-law, describes the life-changing experience Mauni Mata had a few months after Innu’s marriage.
Observing her mother-in-law’s reticent devotion to Lord Ram, Innu reveals that Mauni Mata made a solemn vow of “maun vrat” following the destruction of Babri Masjid and continued to do so till the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya was built.
She is currently 85 years old.
