On November 21, in the landmark case when Gee’s family sued the NCAA for failing to safeguard him from repeated head trauma, counsel requested the jury to grant widower Alana $55 million. Gee’s family had filed a lawsuit against the NCAA.
Gee’s widow gave his brain to the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, which is how researchers learned that he had “chronic traumatic encephalopathy,” or “CTE.” The NCAA was aware of the dangers of head trauma in sports since the 1930s, according to attorneys in Los Angeles Superior Court, but failed for many years to safeguard the players.

Attorney Bill Horton stated that no one can bring Matt back, but they can argue what the NCAA did to him was wrong. He seeks the NCAA’s attention on this matter. However, the NCAA said that Gee’s abrupt cardiac death was caused by chronic hypertension, acute cocaine intoxication, and other major medical issues. Will Stute, an attorney, stated that the NCAA had nothing to do with the unfortunate events that ended Mr Gee’s life.
Over the years, CTE has been a concern.
Gee was one of five linebackers from the 1989 Trojans team to pass away before age 50. However, his is only the second case to go to trial with claims that strikes to the head caused CTE, a degenerative brain illness.
CTE can only be identified after a person has passed away and is linked to memory loss, depression, and progressive dementia. In the previous ten years, college football players have filed hundreds of wrongful death and personal injury claims against the NCAA.
